Cedar Pulse Lab opened in 2014 after Janet Hutton spent nearly a decade watching patients leave hospital pathology departments holding a printout of numbers with no explanation of what any of it meant. The lab started with four test panels and a single phlebotomy chair. The first year was quiet. Janet ran the front desk herself on Tuesday and Thursday mornings while a part-time phlebotomist handled collections. Word spread slowly, mostly through family physicians in the surrounding area who appreciated that their patients were coming back with results they could discuss rather than results they were afraid of.
By 2018, Cedar Pulse Lab had expanded to a full weekday schedule and added the hormone and nutritional panels that now make up a significant share of the workload. The decision to bring a second phlebotomist on full-time came after a run of particularly busy autumn months, when back-to-school physicals and pre-winter health checks pushed wait times longer than Janet was comfortable with. The lab also joined a regional quality assurance programme that year, submitting samples to external proficiency testing four times annually. That process has continued without interruption.

"Saturday hours made all the difference. I work long shifts Monday through Friday and had been putting off blood work for over a year. Booked online, in and out in twenty minutes."
"The cardiac panel gave me and my cardiologist a much more detailed picture than the standard lipid screen I had been getting elsewhere. The Lp(a) result in particular was something we had never looked at before."

Every report includes a plain-language summary alongside the clinical values. Reference ranges are explained, not just printed.
Complete blood count, lipid panel, blood glucose, and thyroid function results are available within four to six hours of sample collection on most weekdays.
Patients can book directly for the majority of our panels. A small number of specialised tests require a physician's requisition, and we will tell you upfront which ones.
Today the lab runs five days a week, with Saturday morning hours added in 2021 to accommodate patients who cannot take time off work. Janet reviews every result before it is released to the portal, a habit she has kept since the first week. The plain-language summary attached to each report was introduced after a patient told Janet she had spent three days anxious about a result that turned out to be a minor, easily corrected iron deficiency. That conversation changed how the lab communicates, and it has not changed back.
She had spent three days anxious about a result that turned out to be nothing serious.Canada's latitude means that from roughly October through March, the angle of the sun is too low for skin to synthesise meaningful amounts of vitamin D from UV-B radiation. By the time most patients notice symptoms of deficiency. Fatigue, low mood, muscle weakness. Their levels have often been declining for months. Testing in September or early October gives you a baseline while levels are still at their seasonal peak, and enough time to start supplementation before the drop becomes significant.

The answer depends entirely on which test is being collected, and getting it wrong in either direction causes problems: eating before a fasting panel can skew results, while unnecessary fasting before a non-fasting test just makes the morning harder than it needs to be.
Read more →A standard lipid panel has been the default cardiovascular screening tool for decades, and it remains useful. But for patients with a family history of early heart disease, or those who have had a borderline result and want a more complete picture, the standard four markers leave out information that can meaningfully change a risk assessment.

Her previous role as senior laboratory technologist at a regional hospital gave her a close view of how long patients waited for results and how rarely anyone explained what those results actually meant. That gap is what she set out to close. Outside the lab, she keeps a small vegetable garden and reads medical journals on Saturday mornings with a pot of strong tea.
hello@cedar-pulse-lab.comMost panels at Cedar Pulse Lab do not require a physician's requisition. You can book directly for routine blood work, nutritional testing, hormone panels, and STI screening. A small number of specialised send-out tests do require a requisition, and we will confirm this when you enquire.
It depends on the test. The comprehensive metabolic panel requires a four-hour fast, and the lipid panel and cardiac extended panel require a twelve-hour fast. Most other panels, including the CBC, thyroid screen, and vitamin D, require no fasting. Your booking confirmation will include specific preparation instructions for whatever you have ordered.
